Europa: An exploration game with flow state appeal

Europa is a Windows-only adventure game due to be released in 2023. Developed by environment artist and world builder Helder Pinto, it boasts the same cinematic beauty as other acclaimed games he’s worked on, such as Overwatch, Under Siege, Crysis, CryEngine, and Diablo III.

This exploration game revolves around the idea of a posthuman utopia with lush scenery, much like Subnautica, but with none of the eeriness. It’s a single-player sandbox game with puzzles, skills, and mysteries waiting to be revealed at every corner.

What is Europa about?

An indie game 5 years in the making, Europa follows the adventures of an android called Zee as he explores an abandoned world on Jupiter’s satellite, Europa. As he sets forth from his home, a watermill set in an idyllic valley, he comes across caves, waterfalls, temples, and decommissioned robots, slowly piecing together stories of humanity, Earth, and Europa.

What are the best features of Europa on Steam?

Pinto’s Europa is a game of exploration and meditation, whose player moves in leaps and bounds, soaring and gliding serenely above the landscape thanks to a Zephyr jetpack. The best thing about this peaceful game is the mystery hidden among the meadows and mountains, where the vestiges of a fallen civilization are immortalized.

Europa: Promising and understated sci-fi exploration game

As indie games go, Europa impresses with graphics, cinematics, and animation. This game is a labor of love; this shows through in fanciful flora, whimsical foxes, doves, robots that chime in throughout, and many other little touches. The player’s free-flow movements, accumulation of skills, and gradual deciphering of humanity’s secrets make this a flow-state game to remember.
